This shampoo and conditioner combo smells amazing and keeps my hair hydrated and smooth! Curious to see how others responded to customize hair care, I also asked three other staffers on the Well+Good team if they were willing to try. I also noticed I could use a fair amount less than my normal conditioner to achieve the same silky feel. I appreciated the instructions to leave on for at least three minutes, too; it made many showers that otherwise would have been quick rinses feel like real moments of self-care.
I don’t particularly enjoy hair masks, so I was excited about this. I wondered initially why they weren’t in my personalized routine, but after a few weeks using Prose, I realized root volume curly hair that I don’t need them when I am using the right products. When it comes to manifesting the hair of your dreams, having a one-size-fits-all solution isn’t always the move.
I am definitely going to continue purchasing the hair products because of how they made my curls look and feel. So my personal Prose Conditioner is supposed to help with curl definition and body boost! Again, this conditioner is also silicone free, which let me point out, is going to make a difference in the amount of slip in your product. During your consultation, when selecting Silicone Free as an option for your products, there is some text that informs you that silicone is actually what helps with detangling, softness and smoothness.
I only shampoo about once a week, so this is the Prose product I’ve used the least. Right off the bat, as a curmudgeonly health journalist, I raised an eyebrow when I saw my shampoo includes CBD, which is typically under-studied and overhyped. But other standouts like hyaluronic acid and collagen made immediate sense for smoothing strands and healthy-ing up my hair. Hair — much like the eating patterns, sleep habits and exercise routines I am much more familiar with writing about — is so personal; what feels good and produces the desired results for one person often doesn’t for another. I could read as many online reviews as I could find, but I’d need to get my hands dirty — or rather, creamy, mousse-y and gel-y. According to Prose, this reformulation process is most often conducted over email—or simply by re-taking the survey on the website.
Loaded with curl-defining polymers (remember those from middle school science class?) and nourishing oils, my curl cream took a little trial and error to get used to. Hoping to make the most of the moderately sized bottle, I didn’t want to waste any pumps. But over time I landed on the sweet spot of about three pumps to adequately coat my curls.
Still, I’m eager to re-up — and I think I might splurge on the Custom Hair Oil ($48), too. Even though that sounds like a lot, it really only takes a few minutes to fill in your information and pick your preferences, including for fragrances. I was looking for less frizz, more moisture and more defined curls. I also find my scalp gets itchy relatively easily, so I didn’t want anything to add to the irritation.
It took the Prose R&D team more than eight months to develop a curl cream that was truly flexible on all hair types and densities. The reality is that no two heads of curls, coils or waves are the same. From the tightness of our texture – 2a to 4c and often a combination of several curl types – to the hair’s porosity, density, width and length, our hair responds differently to ingredients. As I mentioned earlier, this conditioner is so good that I haven’t actually even needed my Prose Pre-Shampoo Hair Mask yet! I feel like it does such a great job preventing dry, brittle hair but without any of the added weight, I used to get when using hair oils or other moisturizing products.
