My role as a sales agent is to build and maintain customer relationships. This means that I connect people with people, and that’s about customer support. It’s pretty simple.
While it’s great that you can have a sales agent, having one who can actually connect with customers is the key to building strong customer relationships. For that, you need someone who has access to people’s own feelings and opinions. To that end, you need to be able to listen to people, so listen to your customers as well. You need someone who’s able to listen to you and respond in a way that matches your own personal values.
You need someone who is able to “get to know you,” and that means you need to be able to talk to them personally. As a sales team member, you need to be able to show up, and talk to people, and they need to be able to see that you’re willing to sit down with them face to face. To that end, you need to have a good reputation for listening.
I think a lot of sales reps have it all good: they have great rapport with customers, they get to know exactly what their customers want, they get to be able to talk about their company in a way that doesn’t sound weird, they get to make sales calls that are a lot more entertaining.
And to that end, I think you need to be good at listening. There’s a lot of times when a customer is just not willing to talk to you, but you need to be able to keep trying to make contact.
When I’m working with a customer, I ask them questions and listen to their responses. I don’t tell them what I’m interested in, I just answer any questions I have about what they do, what they need, etc. I even occasionally send them an email. I don’t expect them to respond immediately.
I think you should try to be as entertaining as you can. Theres a lot of times where a customer will not talk to you because they are the wrong demographic. What you need to do is find the ones that are and then work with them through. If you think you can help the customer to get more sales, then you need to be able to do more than just listen.

Another reason why there’s been such a high turnover in our sales team is the fact that the salespeople are new and inexperienced. While they might be great at sales, when I was a new member of the team they were all so busy working on their sales pitches that they weren’t really giving us a lot of time to learn how to market ourselves.
In the sales world it’s all about the numbers for the average person. When you’re trying to grow your sales team, you need to be able to sell to customers who are actually interested. Sales people need to be able to communicate effectively with various audiences: the product or service, the sales person, and the customers. They need to understand what makes them so effective, so what better way to practice this than through the sales process itself.
