We all know that video games are an indispensable part of our lives. We are the most active, and our brains are so wired to play that they are always on and we have an intense urge to play, and we do. But, if we are honest, it feels good. But, that’s not the whole story.
For some reason, we’ve been taught that playing video games is a pleasurable experience. We are taught that a lot of people like to play video games, but there are only a couple of hundred million of us, and most of us are not all that interested in video games. If you are one of them, you may not even realize it, but you’re missing out on a great way to spend your time.
So, we know what we want to do, but it still feels good. We are learning that we can spend our time doing pretty much anything we want. But, how do we do that? We use our time, our energy, and our money to do things that we don’t have to do, to help us spend our time on things we do have to do, and to get us off of our lazy asses and get us into the office.
This is a good time to mention that we are a video game company, and we make video games. In our day jobs, we make video games, we write and design our games, we write the marketing material, we create the art, we animate our games, we make our games fun to play. And there’s the rub between a publisher and the developer. An independent developer is usually making games that you and your friends want to play that are a lot more complicated than the ones that your favorite publisher has out. That means their game is going to have more story and more characters, and more that you’ll want to play with others.
But then when the publisher releases the game, they have to convince the gamerbase to buy it. The endgame is usually a lot more complicated than the publisher’s game, and the publisher has to ensure that everyone who plays the game can play the whole thing. Publishers can also make sure that everyone who buys their games is playing what the publisher wants everyone to play, even if it doesn’t make sense for them to make a game that everyone will love.
And, in my opinion, publishers have to be aware of the fact that gamers have a wide range of tastes. Some fans want a game with all the same features as the latest blockbuster movie, others want a game that has an incredibly deep story. Some people want to play a game that is a puzzle game that lets you build your own robot. Some people like to play a game that will let you collect coins.
