Wilson, who has been researching our brains since the 1950s, is that some of our higher-level thinking processes are based on the square of the distance between the center of a brain and the center of gravity of the head. Our brains are built for thinking with a “square” brain.
While it’s true that our brains are built this way, it’s also true that most of the time our brains only use a fraction of the square-brain thinking that they use. For example, we use only a small fraction of the square-brain thinking when we’re talking. The rest of the time, we’re thinking about how tall we are, how long we are, how long we’ve been sitting, and what our future holds.
We’re made for square brain thinking. Its a very important skill to have for sure. It may not seem like it but the way we think affects everything from our relationships to our finances. We’ve all been there and seen it. When you get into a rut of thinking the same way all the time, you’ll probably either give up or explode.
My partner and I were talking tonight about how important square brain thinking is. I was talking about how some people get a lot of their productivity from square brain thinking. For instance, if I’m writing a novel, I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the plot, the characters, the setting, or anything else. I just write.
That’s like a very small percentage of the people who write novels. In fact, the vast majority of writers have a strong focus on the plot and characters, but they know that they have to keep that in mind because it’s what will drive the plot and characters. That’s why you’ll rarely find them in the back of bookstores.
This is a problem when you are writing an entire book. An entire novel and the plot alone is a lot to think about, let alone think about while writing it. But thats just because you dont expect people to read it, its just normal.
A big part of writing is getting the plot right. With every other sentence you need to figure out what the characters are up to. This is where you need to be a writer and not just a reader. You need to be able to step away from your characters and think about a plot, and then you need to have everything else in your plan. No one is going to read your entire novel because they are stuck on the first few chapters.
The point isn’t to force your readers to read everything. It’s just to make them want to know more. With the right story, every reader will be able to finish the book anyway.
