In order to truly develop self-awareness and self-control, you must first develop a clear picture of yourself. It’s not so much that you have to stop and question your actions, but that you have to first understand what you are doing to your body. The more you understand what you are doing, you will be much more aware of when and how you are acting.
It’s a very similar idea to the one that the Buddha had. The idea that the body is a machine that has to be programmed in order to function properly, or that we have to take responsibility for our own actions. The idea that we can’t control our thoughts, our emotions, or our habits.
We also need to learn to take responsibility for our own actions. For example, if you have to drink a lot to stay alert, then that is a bad habit. If you get a good night sleep, you wont have a bad night and you will be much more conscious of how you are using your day.

There are many tools at our disposal that can help us learn to take self-responsibility for our actions. One of these tools is meditation.
