You may be able to add a few elements like extra leaves if you are working on a tree. If a redesign is not possible, then touch up the mistake using a razor blade as follows. The faster the pen is moved, the lighter the line will be, because there was not enough time in contact with the leather to burn it dark. The slower the pen is moved, the darker the line will be, because the slower movement gives the pen a longer time to burn any given spot on the leather. When tool stamping and texturing the surface of leather, thin leather can stretch and move, causing the leather to distort its shape and curl.
When burning on low to medium low heat I didn’t have any problems with the different techniques I use. If you need to re-burn over an area let it cool completely before re-working. If the leather gets too warm it loses firmness and it felt more like I was carving/shaping the leather instead of burning it.
My wife bought this old trunk, that has a leather covering. The novel thing about it, though, is that the leather was applied flesh-side out… or maybe it’s suede or nubuck. Leather is a lot of fun to burn on, and a lot different than wood.
Not much I can do about that except scrape a little of the color away. We are going to repeat the process with the flesh side of the leather. The reason is that this will further compress the leather to give us the firmest burning surface. Place the piece of leather flesh side up on a clean smooth surface.
As you can see there are little pools of water here and there. Don’t worry about them as the leather will quickly absorb the water. Before we get going I need to explain the difference between the flesh and skin side of the leather.
The flesh side is the rough or back side of the leather and the skin is the smooth side. Finally, we would recommend working in a ventilated room and always try to avoid inhaling the smoke from the burning. Leather burning will produce a residue that may block your tip wither ruining it or affecting the strokes you’re trying to do. Once you’ve worked the leather in different directions, it’s time to let it dry. You can prepare your leather the day before you need it, as to leave it dry all night. Next, we are going to leave it for a little time to make sure the leather absorbs most of the water.
Our book recommendation is Learn to Burn by Simon Easton, which gives you a step-by-step to getting started with pyrography. The book also contains clear how-to photos as well as over 40 patterns you can use. We also recommend one of the best pyrography kits below. The wattage or power of a wood-burning tool is connected to how hot the tool can get. The best power rating is around 60 watts for a wood-burning pen.
